AI tools are useful for journalism when you understand what they actually do well and where they fail. They can summarize documents, transcribe interviews, clean up drafts, and surface research leads. They cannot replace reporting. Every output needs verification. Research and synthesis
The highest-value use of AI in journalism is processing large volumes of information quickly. Summarizing a 200-page PDF, extracting key claims from a transcript, or finding patterns across hundreds of documents. These tools do that well — when you verify the output.

Upload your own documents and ask questions grounded in that material. NotebookLM only answers from your sources — it does not pull from the open web. This makes hallucination less likely (though not impossible). Good for analyzing a set of court filings, interview transcripts, or policy reports. Also generates audio summaries.
Drafting and editing
AI writing assistants are better at catching errors than generating original prose. Use them for grammar, structure, and clarity — not for reporting.

Open-source grammar checker that supports over 30 languages. The self-hosted version runs entirely on your machine — nothing leaves your computer. A better choice than Grammarly when working with sensitive text. The free tier covers basic grammar; Premium adds style rules and a larger dictionary.
Transcription and audio
AI transcription has gotten good enough to replace most manual transcription. Not perfect — you still need to review the output, especially for proper nouns and technical terms.

Primarily a text-to-speech and voice synthesis platform. Useful for creating audio versions of articles, narrating newsletters, or producing podcast content from text. The voice cloning feature raises ethical questions — journalists should consider disclosure when using synthetic voices in published audio.
What AI gets wrong
Every AI tool in this guide has limitations that matter for journalism. Ignore these at your credibility's expense.
- Hallucination. LLMs generate text that sounds authoritative but is fabricated. ChatGPT has invented court cases, academic papers, and statistics. Claude and Gemini do this too. Treat every AI-generated claim as unverified.
- Bias. Models reflect the data they were trained on. This includes geographic bias (English-centric), temporal bias (training cutoff dates), and cultural bias. AI-generated summaries of contested topics may present one perspective as settled fact.
- Confidentiality. Text you paste into a cloud AI tool may be stored, logged, or used for training. OpenAI's default ChatGPT settings use your inputs for model improvement. Source identities, unpublished reporting, and confidential documents should not go into cloud-based tools without understanding the data policy.
- Over-reliance. AI is fast. Speed creates a temptation to skip verification. A 2024 study found journalists using AI assistants were less likely to catch factual errors in AI-generated drafts than in human-written drafts. The tool works best as a starting point, never an endpoint.
Privacy and data policies
How each tool handles your data matters. Here is what you need to know.
- ChatGPT (OpenAI): Trains on your conversations by default. You can opt out in settings or use the Team/Enterprise plan, which excludes training data. API usage is not trained on.
- Claude (Anthropic): Does not train on user conversations by default. The API and Pro plan both exclude training. Anthropic publishes its usage policy and data retention periods.
- Google Gemini: Free-tier conversations may be reviewed by humans and used for model improvement. The paid Workspace plan has stronger data protections.
- Perplexity: Stores search history. Pro plan queries are not used for training. Free-tier data usage is less clear.
- Local models (Ollama): Run entirely on your machine. Nothing is transmitted. This is the only option that guarantees confidentiality — at the cost of slower performance and smaller model capability.
